First Aid Services
Bureau / Department | Auxiliary Medical Services (AMS) |
---|---|
Objective | To provide resources to augment the regular medical and health services to maintain the care and well-being of the people of Hong Kong. |
Content | In times of emergency and natural disaster, AMS will supplement the medical and health services by providing triage / treatment to the injured on the spot, to convey casualties to hospitals, and to care for patients at both acute and convalescent hospitals. AMS also provides first aid coverage at public functions. |
Groups / Persons Affected | Injured persons in Hong Kong and AMS staff and members. |
Impact | AMS is committed to implementing gender mainstreaming and will continue to adopt gender sensitive measures, where applicable. Since 2005, AMS members have been using curtains in treating injured persons during their first-aid duties to enhance patients' privacy. Additional equipment, such as blankets, will also be used as and when required. Furthermore, every first-aid team has at least one female member and patients as far as practicable be examined and treated by AMS members of the same gender during normal first-aid administration. In cases where a patient is required to be further examined by a doctor, he / she will be examined in the presence and assistance of an AMS member of the same gender, where possible. |
Success Factor / Lessons Learned | The designation of a gender focal point is conducive to the adoption of the gender mainstreaming concept. Gender-related train-the-trainer workshop was organised for the operations and training grade officers of AMS. |
