Promotion of the Convention
- The Government continues to promote the Convention through various channels. The public can access the full text of the Convention by visiting a dedicated webpage set up to promote the Convention. After the Committee’s consideration of the previous report in 2014, the Government issued press release to inform the public of the Committee’s Concluding Observations.
- The Government collaborates with WoC to regularly organise publicity and public education programmes to enhance public understanding of the Convention. Apart from regular promotional activities, we have launched an intensive territory-wide publicity campaign to promote the Convention in the preparation of this report, with roving exhibitions in venues in all 18 Districts including public libraries, district community centres, universities, Government buildings, shopping malls and transport hubs. Publicity materials and websites are also regularly updated and revamped. Brochures, cartoon booklets with the full text of the Convention, a dedicated webpage and promotional videos were produced and widely distributed in order to further enhance public awareness of the Convention. In the preparation of the current report, a three-month consultation on the Outline of Topics of the Report was conducted, including meetings with 18 DCs, various women’s groups, the LegCo Panel on Constitutional Affairs, and organisation of two public forums.
- To step up promotion of the Convention among the youth, we organised in 2017-18 a secondary school students video shooting competition on creative expression of views on women’s development and the principles of the Convention. The competition received over 100 entries, and its workshops introducing the principles and provisions of the Convention were also well attended by students.
- In addition, WoC, EOC and the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education continue to promote the Convention, reduce gender prejudice and stereotyping in society and raise public awareness of gender-related matters as well as understanding of and respect for human rights, equal opportunities and elimination of discrimination.
